Fluency Time

One of the biggest issues in my Title Reading classroom was....Fluency! I often struggled with trying to figure out how to fit fluency work into my test prep lessons, comprehension lessons and baseline interventions. I knew that my students would never be able to effectively comprehend if they weren't fluent readers but it still always ended up  being last on my teaching list! This is why I created this super easy way to work it into five minutes...give or take a little. Once my students had mastered the three fluency activities it became a quick ,easy and effective way to enhance fluency! They loved reading with their peers and I loved having some time to observe and assess their oral reading. You can check it out at my TPT store or just click on the picture below!

I've caught the reading bug.....

My son just started Pre-K and he was the STAR STUDENT yesterday! WOOT WOOT! This meant that he got to bring his favorite book to share with the class. This reignited his excitement about books and reading. After seeing this, I decided to create a similar activity for school age kids. With October coming up I thought this would be the perfect reading motivator.  You can download a plan, parent letter and 3 different graphic organizers for this activity. This is geared towards K-2. Just click on one of the pictures and you can download this document through google docs.

Starting the year with SUPER reading strategies...

I don't know about you... but my kids have always really struggled in the area of reading strategies.  They often read a text and do not remember anything from the text except basic recall information. I created this Reciprocal Teaching Bundle to help remedy this problem. This includes task cards, rubrics, graphic organizers and sample lesson plans. The kids LOVED it and I found very effective! Check it out at TPT! Check it out by clicking on the picture or the link below.

Teaching reading like my mama taught me!

The goal of this blog is to provide tools that will make kids LOVE reading again. My mom helped make learning to read an adventure! Every week my mother, my brother, and I drove to the library and picked out as many books as they would allow.  We would go straight home, snuggle up on the big cushy couch and read.  As we read, we talked about the letters and the sounds the words made. We talked about the characters and then would  retell the story. She would cheer loudly about how very bright we were.  So, of course my brother and I loved books and both grew up to be teachers. Can you imagine the difference it would make in our kid's and student's lives if we could pass this love of reading on to them? Hopefully I can help you do this as I post reading lessons and ideas.
